New insight into the Auger decay process in O2: the coincidence perspective

چکیده
Photoelectron-Auger electron coincidence spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the investigation of Auger decay processes with different core-ionized intermediate states. In this paper we describe an investigation into the Auger decay of the O2 molecule, with the purpose of bringing new insight into the dynamics of the core hole decay mechanism. Using a novel experimental approach to measuring such coincidence spectra we report the highest resolution Auger spectrum of O2 recorded hitherto. In our approach, we have combined the advantages of these coincidence spectra with the high resolution and excellent signal-to-noise ratios of non-coincident Auger spectra and a state-of-the-art fit analysis. In this way we derived information about the potential energy curves of the final states W 3 u, B 3 g, and B’ 3 u and concluded that the corresponding Auger transitions are formed to a big part by strongly overlapping vibrational progressions. The present findings are compared to earlier results reported in the literature confirming some theoretical predictions. In addition, several new features are observed, which are attributed to autoionization of neutral doubly excited states.

Photoelectron-Auger electron coincidence spectroscopy of free molecules: new experiments
Photoelectron-Auger electron coincidence spectroscopy probes the dicationic states produced by Auger decay following the photoionization of core or inner valence levels in atoms, molecules or clusters. Moreover, the technique provides valuable insight into the dynamics of core hole decay. This paper serves the dual purpose of demonstrating the additional information obtained by this technique c...

متن کاملMulti-coincidence spectroscopy on interatomic Coulombic decay
The inner-shell ionized states in matter are subject to Auger decay. Auger spectra are considered as fingerprint images of the atom where the inner-shell hole is created. About a decade ago, Cederbaum and coworkers [1] proposed a new mechanism of electronic decay where the environment plays a role. For an isolated atom or molecule with an innervalence vacancy, Auger decay is often energetically...
متن کاملLinear magnetic and alignment dichroism in Auger–photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy
Auger–photoelectron coincidence measurements for polarized targets are theoretically considered. We present a general expression for the cross section of sequential double photoionization of polarized atoms within the two-step model. Linear magnetic and alignment dichroism in coincidence experiments is discussed in more detail. For illustration, we made ab initio calculations based on the multi...
متن کاملThe LVV Auger line shape of sulfur on copper studied by Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy.
We have studied the line shapes of Cu(0 0 1)-p (2 × 2)S L2VV and L3VV Auger decay by means of Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy. Measuring the LVV Auger spectrum in coincidence with S 2p1/2 and 2p3/2 photoelectrons respectively, we have been able to separate the two overlapping Auger spectra and determine their intrinsic line shapes. The two Auger transitions, though shifted in energ...
